BIO 181 McCague File-072 I. Examine the Spinal Cord under low power of your microscope. Locate: Central canal lined with ependyma cell (ectodermal origin). In the gray matter area locate the small cell bodies of internuncial neurons, also the large cell bodies of the somatic motor neurons in the ventral horn. In the white matter areas locate ascending and descending fiber tracts: Gracile fasciculus Cuneat fasciculus Dorsal median sulcus Dorsal nerve root (gray column) Ventral spino cerebellar fasciculus Lateral cortical-spinal fasciculus Lateral spinocerebellar fasciculus Ventral spinothalamic fasciculus Ventral nerve roots (gray matter) Ventral corticospinal fasciculus Ventral median sulcus Note: The positions of all other major ascending and motor tracts in the cord see p. 314 in Look for the oligodendroglia cells in the white matter area of the cord where myelin is formed.
