Social Stars Viewing exo-planets o Doppler Method – works better for larger planets because there is a larger wobble o Transit Method – Star gets less bright – will return to its brightness after the planet crosses the star can see additional absorption lines besides those of the stars – can observe what the planet is made of, or at least what its atmosphere is Kepler Mission – will stare at stars to determine any exoplanets The Sun o photosphere – the opaque surface of the Sun completely composed of gas, however light cannot pass through it o Chromosphere – thin layer, a thermal emitter releases red photons o Corona – large, low-density envelope extremely hot – 2 million Kelvin very thin its structure is due to magnetic fields o Solar wind – creates electrons and positive ions streaming from the Sun move at about 1000 km/sec will interact with magnetic fields cause of Earth’s aurora o Solar flare – violent localized eruptions
