DENIAL I set sail for America, under a heavy coat of theatrical make-up and a light veil, in the garb of a widow. I was in mourning for my past life, let us say. I did not know who I was. I did not want to know. With the decision to board ship came a total dismissal of my past. I wanted to be someone new: I wanted to be human, and seamless. AMERICA There in that booming celebration of mechanical invention I fetched up and felt for the first time a little closer to fitting. That galvanized air! The incessant gurgle and hiss, siftings and filtration, as big money was sieved and winnowed into pocket money, drawn off and tamped into big money again; the bushels of seed, sown mechanically, in confetti- glee, like pence from a carriage, pitting the earth and burrowing right away into the soil (in their enthusiasm for work) with tiny prosthetic arms, then thrusting from a happily split waistcoat (proud fat men of America!) the pale prong of progress. Then the green aftermath, multiplying like crazy, going lickety green greener, then goldening, spitting gold teeth to the population, then more seed, back to soil, burrowing, up, down, everything either pulverized or multiplied, buildings becoming clouds with an affable shrug or rising brick by quick brick! There everything was probably monstrous and everything monstrous had a backer who preferred to remain anonymous, a lawyer, and a publicist. AMERICA
