Hearts of Darkness planetary nebula phase only lasts a couple tens of thousands of years o can go through this phase many times Type 1a supernovae o nothing is left after the explosion o heavy elements left over o Glow for a long time because of radioactive nickel o Sirius has the possibility to be a supernovae has a white dwarf with it Above 10 solar masses lives a very short, very bright life o hydrogen fuses into helium, then fuses into carbon and oxygen Sun can’t do this because its not heavy enough o at iron the process stops need energy to fuse iron, can’t produce with iron o Red Supergiants- most of it is the outer hydrogen layers o As star’s iron core reaches Chan. limit the core collapses the protons and the electrons squeeze together and form neutrons get a ball of neutrons (neutrinos) – a lot of energy released in order for this to happen mechanical force of neutrinos bouncing off of the core.
