Chapter 8 (Student) 1 Measuring • Once you have gathered your sample respondents or the subjects for your experiment, you still have to measure the characteristics of interest. • Ask Yourself ± What do you want to know? What is your goal? ± Are you trying to measure the right things? ± Are you overlooking some outcomes that are important but hard to measure? Measuring •A measurement consists of a number and the appropriate units. • To measure a property means to assign numbers to individuals as a way of representing the property. • Instrument – a tool often used to make measurements ± Examples: ruler, scale, exam, survey • Variable – a result of a measurement that takes on different values for individuals What would we use to measure • Height? • Weight? • College Readiness? • Highway Safety?
