Open-Ended Design Project EML 4551 - Capstone Design (Fall 1997) Goal/Purpose: Apply the fundamentals developed in the mechanical engineering curriculum to an individual design project. The fundamentals and software for computer-aided-design and analysis are implemented into the design project. Objectives: Design a single degree-of-freedom tang and clevis joint, and all associated components (see the figures below). The stem should be designed with the following criteria in mind: performance (i.e., uniform stress throughout and below allowable levels), minimum weight, marketability, reliability and durability, cost effectiveness, and manufacturability. Constraints: The following constraints are imposed upon the design: Material can be: Titanium alloy (e.g., 90 % Ti, 6% Al, 4% Va): γ = 280 lb/ft 3 , E = 16 Mpsi, ν = 0.33 Aluminum alloy: γ = 0.100 lb/in 3 , E = 10 Mpsi, ν = 0.30 Steel: γ = 0.283 lb/in 3 , E = 30 Mpsi, ν = 0.30
