Open-Ended Design Project EML 4551 - Capstone Design (Spring 1996) Goal/Purpose: Apply the fundamentals developed in the mechanical engineering curriculum to an individual design project. The fundamentals and software for computer-aided-design and analysis are implemented into the design project. Objectives: Design a bicycle crank (left side) and associated components, if necessary (see the figure below). The crank should be designed with the following criteria in mind: uniform stress throughout. minimum weight. cost effectiveness. manufacturability. Constraints: The following constraints are imposed upon the design: Material is Titanium alloy (90 % Titanium, 6% Aluminum, 4% Vanadium). γ = 280 lb/ft 3 , E = 16 Mpsi, ν = 0.33, σ yield = 120 ksi, σ ult = 135 ksi Nominal length of crank = 7". Must fit standard pedal. Must fit standard bottom bracket
