Open-Ended Design Project EML 4551 - Capstone Design (Spring 1995) Goal/Purpose: Apply the fundamentals developed in the mechanical engineering curriculum to an individual design project. The fundamentals and software for computer-aided-design and analysis are implemented into the design project. Objectives: Design a bicycle handlebar stem and all associated components (see the figures below). The stem should be designed with the following criteria in mind: uniform stress throughout. minimum weight. cost effectiveness. manufacturability. Stem Binder Bolt Weld Weld Expander Wedge Expander Bolt and Washer 3.5 inches 4.5 inches 1.125 inch Outer Diameter Quill Tube 1.0 inch Inner Diameter Binder Tube Extension Tube 20 Degree Angle X Z Y Constraints: The following constraints are imposed upon the design: Material is Titanium alloy (90 % Titanium, 6% Aluminum, 4% Vanadium). γ
