Open-Ended Design Project EML 4551 - Capstone Design (Spring 2001) Goal/Purpose: Apply the fundamentals developed in the mechanical engineering curriculum to an individual design project. The fundamentals and software for computer-aided-design and analysis are implemented into the design project. Objectives: Design a custom automobile wheel (see the figures below). The wheel should be designed with the following criteria in mind: allowable stresses, thermal expansion, minimum weight, cost effectiveness and manufacturability. Z X Y Constraints: The following constraints are imposed upon the design: Material is a metal-based casting (engineer chooses correct alloy, quenching, etc.), Potential operating temperature range is T=400 ° F Nominal diameter of wheel = 16.0", Nominal width of wheel = 7.5", Bolt studs are metal (engineer determines correct diameter, pitch, length, material, etc.), Number of bolt holes is 5,
