Let’s restate part of the problem this way: given that v/c ranges from - 1 to 1, let’s deﬁne θ by v/c = tanh( θ ). Then you’ll want to observe that because of the hypertrig identity for tanh( θ 1 + θ 2 ), the rule for relativistic addition of velocities ( v 3 = ( v 1 + v 2 ) / (1 + v 1 v 2 )) is equivalent to the simple rule θ 3 = θ 1 + θ 2 . 2.
