Group Typology: Paula Cortez
Clinical social workers have to have a vast understanding of group typology so
that appropriate group and client work can be presented and used. Paula Cortez is a 43-year-old
HIV-positive Latina woman originally from Colombia (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014).
Paula was diagnosed HIV positive, acquired AIDS several years later when she was diagnosed
with a severe brain infection and a T-cell count less than 200 and then also diagnosed with
bipolar disorder (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014).
Overtime, Paula has been linked to a
psychiatrist, OB nurse, Primary care physician, and social work to work through these presenting
issues. Paula has a team of providers who all seem to agree that her health is decompensating due
to her non-compliance with treatment that was recommended by her team, and overall lack of
support (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014).
