Writing a Good Essay Answer for Prof. W. Tschinkel (or anyone) Note : these suggestions were written for a course in Animal Behavior, so the examples are not from Animal Diversity. However, the principles and patterns apply to any essay, and should be helpful to you in this and any other course. Question : What observations and experiments gave rise to the concept of token stimulus, and what neuroethological findings tie token stimuli to the structure and function of the nervous system? Step 1. What’s the question about? First, I must explain the evidence that lead to the concept of token stimulus, then the attributes of the CNS that link its structure and function to the token stimulus. Equally important, what is it not about? Well, modal action patterns (mostly), history of ethology, sensory worlds, etc. Step 2. I must gather together the parts of the answer before I clutter the page with possibly useless stuff. For the first part, I could start with a definition of token stimulus
