I have dreamed of being an elementary school teacher since I had children of my own. I have worked hard on acquiring the skills that I need to do so. The future holds far more education to accomplish the goals that I have for the next ten years. There are still many things to cover in order for me to be the teacher that I would like to be. First, I need to finish my Associates degree in Elementary Education. I currently have a year to go to finish this degree. Once I obtain my Associates in elementary education, I would like to become a teacher’s aide. I would also like to continue my education to obtain my Bachelor’s degree so that I can start my teaching career. As a teacher, you need to have patience, tolerance, and flexibility. You have to be understanding towards the students, parents, and colleagues. Each student will face different obstacles in the learning process. I have to be ready to help them overcome these obstacles. I will have to become an effective leader to be a good teacher. The best way to improve my leadership skills is to continue to teach. According to Lieberman, Saxl, and Miles (1988), I will need to learn to deal with the change process, as well as finding and using resources. I will also need to learn how to mange the leadership work, and build my skills and confidence in others. As a teacher I would like to become fluent in Spanish. I believe that Spanish will soon be essential for the teaching profession. It will also aide me in my position as a teacher when it comes to teaching English as a second language students. There is a high population of Spanish speaking people coming to the United States everyday. I would also like to take some classes in special education. Special education teachers teach children who have difficulty learning, reading, or being part of a group. In order to be an

effective teacher and teach all of the diverse students, I would need to be able to create an individual education plan for each student that needed it. I would also need to be able to identify the students that would benefit from special education. It would benefit me to take some classes in psychology and family and consumer science to help me develop my communication skills and to learn about issues affecting family and children. I think that talking to other teachers and tutors would also help me accomplish these goals. There is an organization that I find very interesting. It is called the Council for Exceptional Children. They offer seminars on special education. I would like to attend some of these seminars and become a member of this organization to advance my teaching skills. There is a Life Centered Career Education Training class that I would like to attend.
