The 1920’s was called the “Jazz Age,” The Age of Intolerance,” and the “Age of Wonderful Nonsense (US History, 2011).” Mostly it was known as the “Roaring Twenties.” The 1920’s was a period of great economic, social, and political growth that stemmed from the end of World War I. The end of the war opened the door for tremendous change in the United States. The social changes that happened during the twenties probably contributed the most to the nicknames that were given to this era. One of the most well known changes was the 18 th Amendment. This amendment prohibited the manufacture, transport, and sale of intoxicating liquor. The people that wanted this change were called prohibitionists. They thought that this law would help the social problems and help boost economic growth. The only problem with this was it increased the criminal activities of society. The speakeasy was born. The speakeasy was an illegal night club that sold alcohol. With the speakeasy came the “flapper” which was young women who dressed provocatively with short bobbed hair and short skirts. They also wore provocative makeup for their time. The 18 th Amendment brought new opportunity for the criminals and gangsters that were really popular during this time (US History, 2011). Bootlegging became the major cash crop of the gangsters. Violence erupted and the government was unable to enforce prohibition. The public did not support prohibition at all.
