This can be caused by direct injury to the cord or indirectly from damage to surrounding bones, tissues, or blood vessels (Medline plus.com). Spinal cord injuries can be so substantial that it can render a person or patient to become a paraplegic or quadriplegic. Discussion Questions and Answers: Why was Denise put in a body cast even though her spinal cord injury was not critical? The reason Denise was put into a body even though her spinal cord injury was not critical was to prevent further injury. If Dr. Fiore decided not to put Denise in a body cast, and she later had a serious spinal injury, should Dr. Fiore be held responsible? Yes, because Dr. Fiore should have provided protection that a body cast could have done. How can trauma injure the spinal cord? When the spinal cord is injured, a part or parts of the body inferior to the point of injury may be affected.
