Liansong Guo Jutta Schamp Eng 2 DRAFT Title (working on it) Introduction: Known as one of the most prolific and accomplished Renaissance writers in the world, William Shakespeare has always been a warmly-welcomed discussion topic in the literary circle. Despite his contributions to the world drama with his 37 fine works such as Hamlet, The Tempest and Henry , he leaves us a great number of sonnets, in which he muses on “love, seasonal rhythms, human mortality, writing, and artistic immortality” (Jutta 12). Among these, one of the most widely read and appreciated is Sonnet 18 . In this poem, the author, also regarded as the poet, expresses his admiration for his male partner by comparing his beloved to a summer’s day. Upon his finding that beauty is transitory and his beloved is far “more lovely and more temperate” than the transient season, the poet offers a method to keep one’s love eternal, that is, to put it down into a script or to seal it in a poem. This paper here is trying to give an acute analysis of how the poet in “Sonnet 18” expresses his eternal love for his partner and his beauty by articulating how it transcends nature, and to establish eternality for such love through poetry.
