LIAO 1 Yuhao Liao Jutta Schamp Eng 2 05/16/2011 “Greed and Aggression”--- Three stages of feminine sexuality: from ambivalent desire to holy joy. “Just being an ordinary observer and liver and feeler and letting the experience get through you onto the notebook with the pen, through the arm, out of the body, onto the page, without distortion.” ---- Sharon Olds Sharon Olds, is one of contemporary poetry’s leading voices, who is known for writing intensely personal, emotionally scathing poetry “Sharon Olds is enormously self-aware,” wrote David Leavitt in the Voice Literary Supplement, “Her poetry is remarkable for its candor, its eroticism, and its power to move.” Appearing in Part Three of The Gold Cell, the poem “Greed and aggression” deals with various experiences of sex and related matters rather than family memories. It is striking for its vision of joy of sexuality. The process of embracing this joy was a transformation of a women’s sexual attitude: from the brutal desire to back to nature, then raising to an achievement of holy joy. Olds’ point of view was undoubtedly stripped away from the traditional thoughts of women’s sexuality which was full of “servitude, silence and submission toward men.” This paper aims at how Olds achieved these three stages of sexual transformation by analyzing the metaphors and the crucial poetic
