Lehigh University College of Business and Economics INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION SYSTEMS BIS 111 - SUMMER 2011 Instructor:   Chitra Nayar,  [email protected] Teaching Assistant: Akila Rangaswamy,  [email protected] Course Web Site: LU Helpdesk:  or 610.758.HELP Text Overview This course examines the fundamental role of information systems in supporting and managing all  business functions and enabling firms to compete effectively. Both technical and managerial  aspects of information systems are introduced. The course integrates technical infrastructure,  database concepts, management decision-making, and business process issues critical to the  understanding   of   operational   and   strategic   information   systems.   It   introduces   business  applications that support accounting, finance, supply chain management, and marketing. Learning Objectives Demonstrate an understanding of information systems in a business. Demonstrate an understanding of the operational and strategic information systems in an  organization and the business applications for which they are used. Demonstrate proficiency in related technology and productivity tools. Demonstrate the ability to solve business problems. Demonstrate the ability to work as a team. Course Format: There are two major components to the course. One part is the  Information Systems (IS)  theory , and the other part is learning how to  solve business problems  using productivity tools  such as  Microsoft Excel and Access . The course involves learning the theory material from the  Business Driven Information  Systems ( Second Edition ), Baltzan and Phillips  (McGraw-Hill)

textbook, completing assignments including solving business problems, taking exams, and  collaborating in discussions and team assignments. This course does not require us to  "meet" online on specific days or times. You may work at your own pace as long as you complete  the required work and meet deadlines. Students should review the  Course Calendar  at the end of this syllabus to see the assigned  readings, assignments, and deliverables for each week in the course. This Course   Calendar is  also available on Course Site  at the top of the main page   for quick and easy access  under  General Information . Students are encouraged to read and work ahead as time permits based  on your other commitments when this course runs. You do have to manage your time well to stay  on top of your work and complete the course in the compressed 5-6-week format.
