A cylinder contains one liter of air at room temperature (300 K) and atmospheric pressure (10 5 N/m 2 ). At one end of the cylinder is a massless piston, whose surface area is 0.01 m 2 . Assume that both processes below are adiabatic. a) Quasistatic: Suppose you compress the gas quasistatically, moving the piston by 1 mm. (This is a small enough displacement so that the change in pressure is negligible.) What force must you apply to the piston? (assume the change in pressure is negligible) [0.5] How much work have you done? (assume the change in pressure is negligible)[0.5] To validate above result repeat previous step (calculate work done) without the assumption, i.e. use adiabatic relationship for P and V.
