Objective of Data Modeling The objective of data modeling is to avoid data  anomalies caused by improperly structured  data. Insert anomaly  – unable to insert new  records without violating primary key Delete anomaly  – deleting more information  than intended because data are not  separated into the appropriate table Update anomaly  – failure to update all data  because it is repeated in multiple tables

Part I – Tables for a Single  Event 1. Separate Transaction files into two files: Transaction File Line-item Transaction File 2. Assign Primary Keys to all files Master Files and Transaction File = single  attribute key Line-item Transaction File = multi-attribute key 3. Assign Foreign Keys to Transaction Files Point to Resources and Agents not included in  line-item file 4. Populate tables with non-key data Every input/display field on a form needs to find a  home
