Definitions A categorical variable ’s values are groups or categories Blue or brown eyes Education – some college, no college, HS grad, etc > 40 yr old or < 40 yr old A quantitative variable takes on numeric values Height weight age Notice that any quantitative variable could be treated as a categorical variable.
