M.Yang, School of Economics, UNSW 1 ECON2205/3290: A Brief Guide for Using STATA For Introductory Econometrics , data files have .RAW suffix and data description files have .DES suffix. You need to read the .DES files to understand the data in .RAW files. We use a do-file (with .do suffix), which contains a set of STATA commands, to instruct STATA to read in data and carry out desired computations. You may use Internet Explorer to download do-files by right-clicking the link (underlined file name) and selecting “Save Target As . ..”. Below is an example of using STATA via a do-file. 1. Make a new folder, say F:\ie , in your USB drive. Save the files bwght_1st.do and bwght.raw in this folder. 2. Launch STATA by clicking on the STATA icon in your Desktop.
