Not  absolutely essential to theatre Creates the  environment  of the play engages the senses of the audience  created by designers working with a director. Who are Designers The execute their own vision, along with that of the playwright and director. They collaborate to unify their designs They accommodate the plays physical, aesthetic, and thematic needs.  Scenic Design The physical setting and features within it.

Creates the space where the action will occur.  Indicates the plays time and place  Has relationship to the characters One of the first indicators of the mood of the play Communicates the theme of a play Can be realistic or abstract Can be stationary or fluid Can extend beyond the stage to draw the audience in  Costume Design One of the first indicators of the plays time period Realistic costumes require extensive historical research Reflects a characters: o Personality o Class o Age Conforms to the needs of the performer Can distort the frame or build of a performer  Correlates with the colors and aesthetics of the scenic design Includes fashion accessories

Lighting Design Must make the stage and performers visible Can provide focus and assist in visual composition Powerful in establishing the mood of a scene Establishes the time of day Changes to reinforce the action a play Can help establish a rhythm to a scene  Uses color, direction, and intensity to achieve these goals One of the most flexible between realistic and abstract Sound Design Establishes the aural environment of a play. Sometimes, will include making sure the actors can be heard (with microphones) Provides sound effects and background noise to enhance the atmosphere. o Environmental sounds o Motivated sounds One of the most recent professions in the modern theatre Can include choosing pre- and post-show music Some designers compose original music for a production Make-up Design
