Lesson 3 Commentary Review of the Reading Assignment This chapter discusses: understanding the differences between academic research and workplace research, choosing appropriate research methods, performing primary and secondary research, and assessing the information. Secondary information is available in print, in online databases, on digital disks, on Web sites, and in online discussion groups. The basic research tools available are: online catalogs, reference works, periodical indexes, newspaper indexes, professional websites, and abstract services. You need to learn how to skim sources, record bibliographic information, paraphrase information accurately, quote correctly, and summarize accurately. As you gather information, you need to evaluate it according to six criteria: accuracy, bias, comprehensiveness, appropriate level of technicality, timeliness, and clarity.
