Uses of Sport History -Presentism: treating what you find in the world as you were born as the way the world is --sometimes it's not relevant -Prediction -Analogs --"Lessons of history" ---see future as simpler than the past --Scenarios ---build the future based on scenarios of the past --Debiasing ---humans are fallible decision-makers, but certain kinds of mistakes they make are very predictable ----how many great athletes came from TX? Lots. How many came from Vermont? Can't think of any so they don't have good athletes. --Examining received viewpoints (for analysis) ---if you were a fish, how does it feel to be wet? It's hard to understand situations we're in w/o knowing alternatives etc. Current US Structure of Sport Governance --Amateur Sports act: made to promote amateur sport in america --- USOC > NGB & NGB ----ngb = national governing body (federations in other countries) ---no government role in sport governance --> exception: USOC must send report to gov. every year How are we doing? --no clear goal other than winning medals ---Steinbrenner Commission: "if you just want to take part, find another organization"
