CH 118 9/22/09 Chemical Equilibrium I. Hair Care Products Ammonium chloride is used as a stabilizing agent in hair-care products. Ammonium chloride is highly soluble in water and can dissociate into ammonia and hydrochloric acid. NH 4 Cl ↔ NH 3 + HCl Ammonia gas has a very unpleasant odor and in large amounts could even be toxic. Therefore, large amounts of water should not be used with ammonium chloride. II. Reactions of Iron The following reactions were already at equilibrium because the reactants and products were the same so it remained the same color as the initial iron compound used: FeCl 4 + Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ↔ Fe(NO 3 ) 3 + FeCl 4 FeCl 4 + NaCl ↔ FeCl 4 + NaCl [Fe(SCN)] 2+ + Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ↔ [Fe(SCN)] 2+ + Fe(NO 3 ) 3 [Fe(SCN)] 2+ + KSCN ↔ [Fe(SCN)] 2+ + KSCN [FeF 6 ] 3- + Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ↔ [FeF 6 ] 3- + Fe(NO 3 ) 3 [FeF 6 ] 3- + NaF ↔ [FeF 6 ] 3- + NaF [FeF 6 ] 3- + K 4 [Fe(CN) 6 ]↔ [FeF 6 ] 3- + K 4 [Fe(CN) 6 ]

FeCl 4 + KSCN ↔ KCl + FeSCN This reaction turned dark red/brown which indicates that equilibrium shifted, probably away from the FeCl 4. FeCl
