Schofer 31 August 2010 Logos Essay/Speech Juicing Up “I would have a dramatic energy boost and this substance is otherwise harmless.” With the desire of achieving greatness, Alex Rodriguez gave his explanation for using steroids and banned substances. Why do athletes use steroids? Why do athletes feel insecure about their athletic performance when they are already great in what they do? The question still remains unanswered as athletes still continue to use steroids. People look up to so many great athletes besides Rodriguez, such as Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire Marion Jones, and Ben Johnson. However, these athletes have abused anabolic steroids. The sad part about the issue is that teens in America today are now using steroids already. If readers look at the background information, side effects, and the fact that athletes are basically “cheating,” they should agree that steroids should not be used for performance. Anabolic steroids are derivatives of testosterone. Testosterone is the male hormone that stimulates and promotes the growth of skeletal muscle and body mass. Anabolic has the Greek origin which means “to build.” Steroids date back to the 1930’s when German scientists discovered that steroids increased athletic performance through a series of medical experiments.
