Means 1 Andrew M. Means 21 March 2011 Plattner Candidates for person of the year 1. Sergey Brin and Larry Page a. In 1998, a couple of computer science PhD students named Sergey Brin and Larry Page created a small search engine out of many cheap computers in a dorm room at Stanford University. This system, originally called “BackRub,” was designed to determine the importance of individual websites. Since then, we have seen GOOGLE grow to a worldwide phenomenon that is worth almost thirty billion. These men have never gotten the credit that they deserve since Google is an essential part of our life and our society today. We never hear about the many sacrifices and the challenges that these men have made to keep the project and the movement going. Who would have thought that two men who started their “gadget” in a garage would be in a position of great wealth and power? This is an excellent contribution to society, and they should be in the running for person of the year. 2.
