Notes 2/10 Gunning Key Concepts: What does it mean to be a citizen? o Early citizenship defined by US. o The Modern definition of citizenship has been shaped by conflict over slavery and race in the USA. Succession and Civil War o Emancipation and Amendments 1863 Emancipation Proclamation Civil War Constitution Amendments 13 th Bans Slavery or involuntary servitude. 14 th all citizens to have “due process of law” and “equal protection under the law” 15 th Voting rights for all citizens. o Southern Reconstruction 1866-75 High level of tension is southern social structure. Congress passes Civil Rights laws. US military enforces them. Disputed 1876 election > federal troops withdrawn from the south. o White “Redeemers” 1876-1900 Organized terrorism (KKK and others) to keep blacks from voting. Laws strip away voting access of most blacks. “Jim Crow” segregation established in South.
