Studying the natural world by gathering and analyzing data Reliance on data differs from philosophy, ethics, religion o Scientific Assumptions Natural events follow patterns: Not all events are random occurrences Can determine patterns through observation Assume patterns to be true everywhere Parsimony: If multiple explanations are possible, the simplest is most likely true Scientific Example: Evolution: Shared traits and common ancestry o Scientific Statements Must be testable: Propose hypothesis: testable, educated explanation Evaluate hypothesis with data Scientific Statement: “Neanderthals and modern humans did not interbreed” –testable Non-Scientific Statement: “Humans were created by a supernatural entity” –not testable
