Discuss how using a variety of questioning strategies benefits class discussion. How do students expand their own thinking when they hear the thinking and reasoning of others? Does this promote higher levels of thinking? Using a variety of questioning techniques in the classroom can help teachers elicit more in- depth answers and engage students in critical thinking. Open-ended questions require students to reflect on what they have learned and what they already know or think about a subject to formulate personalized answers. On the other hand, behavioral therapist Jim Peterson has created a questioning technique known as TAPN – questions that address the factors of Time, Amount, Public, and Novelty. Asking students questions that address these factors increases the percentage of students who are motivated and actively engaged in learning and answering the questions provided (Finley, T., 2014). An example of a normal question versus a question using TAPN guidelines looks like this: 1. You’re going to read the next three pages. When you finish, you are going to answer the five questions that follow the reading.
