Tension between dependency and liberty - No such thing as United States of America: have regional differences (13 separate colonies) - Over course of 17 th century, learned how New England communitarians Puritans are possessive like the Puritans in Old England - Rising individualism, violence ) becomes much like the place they had left in the 1630s - By 1700s, end of New England ways (charity for all) irony (Chesapeake developed in opposite direction from New England: white racial solidarity) - Community based and formed by race and commerce in Chesapeake - Race based community were more long lasting than religion - Less competitiveness, materialism in Chesapeake (racial community) - Regional distinctiveness over slavery - Differences among regions, how to converge these regions together? - Move from regionalism to convergence can be understood in tension between British America’s coming of age (rapid colonial economic social development) - Tension between coming of age and dependency on metropolis of mother country - Crisis of identity between quest for liberty and growth of dependency (dependent on identity) - 1660-1776: Are we not Englishman? If not, who are we? What have we become? II. Three Periods of Tension: Anglicization (1660-1745), Imperial Wars (1745-1763), Taxation (1764- 1776) - Convergence of culture, politics, identity, economics - First period : Anglicization – to make or become English in form or character - First crucial event begins in 1660: restoration of monarchy after long parliament rule (1641), English civil war between royalists and Puritans (rebels led by Oliver Cromwell) - Charles the first was beheaded by Cromwell - 1658: decide to bring back Charles’ sons, restore monarchy, Charles II returned to power in 1660 - Charles II brought back on different situation than Charles I (nervous king), whig restoration (controlled

and dominated by the same people who beheaded Charles I, people who believed in individual liberty) - Group who was bringing back the king were frightened of restoring a king like Charles I (tyrant, fear of taxation) - New kind of powerful monarchy (tyranny was feared), much reduced power - Effort to move outwards wanted to go back and take a close look at American colony (many new restoration colonies, ex: NY controlled by Dutch) - Administrators brought up for custom service, government’s council, duties - Change in bureaucracy, social and cultural change (local and indigenous elite before) - Political operators coming into these colonies (well educated), bring colonies back under thumb of England - Cultural and social effect 3 had a galvanizing effect on the local elites, status anxiety (political operators from England) 2 had to compete with them - Good English politicians by comparing themselves (what do we have to do now to educate ourselves?) - Start to buy same things as political operators, had lots of money so was able to trade with these
