MODULE 1 UNIT 3 Assignment Part A Virtual Lab Introduction to spectroscopy In this assignment, you will study the basic principles of spectroscopy. You will learn to identify an unknown gas sample (e.g., hydrogen, helium, neon) by comparing its observed absorption or emission spectrum with those of known gases. According to actual models, electrons in atoms occupy orbits at specific distances from the nucleus and, thus, electrons have only specific, discrete energies. The study of the transitions between energy levels that involve the absorption or emission of light is the field of spectroscopy . The interaction of radiation with matter can cause transitions between the energy levels of the atoms or molecules. Absorption and emission spectroscopy is used to study the energy levels of the atoms, molecules, and solids. Absorption is a transition from a lower level to a higher level with transfer of energy from the radiation field to an atom, molecule, or solid. Emission is quite the opposite: a transition from a higher level to a lower level with transfer of energy from the emitter to the radiation field. The spectrum of an atom or molecule depends on its energy-level structure, making absorption spectra useful for identifying elements or compounds. An emission spectrum of an element has lines in it which are against a black background. If those lines are in the visible spectrum, then we see them as specific colors.
