MODULE 2 UNIT 2 Assignment Part D Describe the shape (bent, pyramidal, tetrahedral etc.) of the molecule and the approximate bond angle (180º, slightly less than 109.5º etc.) for the following molecules. You need to draw the structural formula of the molecule in order to be able to answer these questions. a) SBr 2 is a 6A molecule and is therefore bent. Orbitals are located at 109.5 degree angle therefore we will never find two orbitals in a straight line. b) NI 3 Is a 5A molecule with a pyramid shape with three atoms of iodine surround a single atom of nitrogen. Each of the angles will be slightly less than 109.5 degrees. c) CHCl 3 is a 4A molecule with each angle being 109.5 degrees. It is tetrahedral molecule with three atoms of chlorine surrounding a single atom of carbon, with a single atom of hydrogen on the remaining side of the carbon atom 6 marks 2.
