Setting Analysis The Street Location Description Textual Evidence Function The street side It’s a cold, November day with unrelenting wind. The force from the wind is deterring people from going about their lives and poses as an obstacle that needs to be overcome. The people on the street and those who tucked themselves away are aware that it is a problem but few dare to challenge it. “Cold November wind” “It rattled [...] sucked window shades out through the top of opened windows [...]” “Drove most people off the street [...]” “It did everything it could to discourage people [...]” Oftentimes, the setting and the weather are directly correlated to events that are occuring in the text and/or to the character. In this case, Lutie Johnson is going through a rough time in her life. Events that are happening outside of her control are trying to break her down and have her submit. However Lutie Johnson is adapting in her own way and fully intends to overcome her difficulties.
