COST ALLOCATION Page 8 of 35

RETURN ON INVESTMENT Do benefits of a design outweigh the costs? - Engineering Economy Benefit/Cost comparison: 1. Determine what is changed due to the design (e.g., better product quality) 2. Put changes into monetary units (e.g., improved quality is worth $.02/unit 3. Calculate total benefits vs Costs ) - e.g., all the changes totaled give benefits of $4,700/yr, all costs total $1,400/yr Other factors - Life of the application - Annual savings - One-time costs - Depreciation - Salvage value - TIME VALUE OF MONEY! SEARCH UNSTRUCTURED SEARCH Brainstorming - group together Nominal Group Technique - individuals write down ideas, then join group - Leader states problem - Individuals write down ideas (no names) separately - Then meet as group - All ideas written on board - Group selects 3 best by secret ballot Page 12 of 35

SEARCH UNSTRUCTURED SEARCH My recommendation for Methods Engineering problems: 1. Select 2 workers, 1 quality engineer/technician, 1 production supervisor (not the worker’s, but get their supervisor’s permission) 2. Use Nominal Group Technique but get 5 best ideas 3. Then, with worker’s only, select best idea 4. After implementation, if good results, give full credit to worker by sending their supervisor a memo 5. If not successful, go to step 1, use same 2 workers plus one additional Page 13 of 35
