E FFECTOR  T C ELLS Three major types: 1) CD4 + T H 1 2) CD4 + T H 2 3) CD8 + CTLs Differ from naïve T H  and T C : Less stringent activation Increased expression of adhesion molecules Production of both soluble and membrane-bound effector molecules A. C YTOTOXIC  T L YMPHOCYTES  (CTL S ) Activated     differentiated  T C , arise from naïve precursors  Naïve TC cells incapable of killing target cells; referred to as  CTL   precursors  (CTL-P)  CTL-Ps   NOT FUNCTIONAL!

C HAPTER 14: C ELL -M EDIATED E FFECTOR R ESPONSES P AGE 3 Lytic capability Recognition, elimination of altered self; also Graft rejection ( CD8 + ,  MHC Class I  restricted) Activation energy of CTL-P evolvement to CTL higher than other effector T cells  in comparison This activation of the CTL-Ps into CTLs requires at least  THREE   SEQUENTIAL  signals –   1) Signal 1      – TCR, MHC Class I + peptide An antigen-specific signal is transmitted by the TCR complex upon recognition of a  peptide-class I MHC molecule complex on a “licensed” APC 2) Signal 2      – Costimulatory B7/CD28 interaction
