Michigan’s risk of Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Tsunamis 2 When dealing with a Natural Disasters, one should always consider the potential risk of it occurring to the area that they live. Examining each disaster by itself and relating them to each other can clear up lots of confusion. Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Tsunamis are natural disasters that have a potentially small risk of occurring in Michigan. Small risk of occurring does not mean that there is no risk of occurring. Before being able to calculate the potential risk of how these natural disasters, one must understand why they occur. Plate tectonics can help to understand why these natural disasters occur; “The theory of plate tectonics states that interactions of the plates along these boundaries account for the formation of new lithosphere, earthquakes, and volcanoes, and the gradual movement of continents” (McConnell, Steer, Knight, Owens, & Park, p. 95). Earthquakes can occur from near the Earth’s surface, and become progressively deeper in the direction moving away from ocean trenches. Earthquakes locations vary because of the boundaries between the plates that grind against each other, producing more earthquakes in certain areas and less in others.
