Great earthquake. Smith, two others, the hippopotamus, thegiraffe, the bos caffer--as large as a full-grown bull, and theelan--but little less, two zebras, and the quaccha, two gnus, andseveral antelopes even larger than these latter animals. Near the coast the rough lava is quite bare: in the central andhigher parts feldspathic rocks by their decomposition have produceda clayey soil, which, where not covered by vegetation, is stainedin broad bands of many bright colours.
