4. The Five Keys to Effective Supervisory Communication 1. Expressive speakers- comfortable expressing themselves. They tend towards extroversion. Introverted or quiet supervisors may at times leave their employees wondering what their supervisors are thinking or how they feel about certain issues. Supervisors who speak out let the people they work with know where they stand, what they believe, and how they feel. 2. Empathetic Listeners- determine feelings and emotional dimensions of others. They are patient and responsive to the concerns of other people. Better supervisors are approachable and willing to listen to suggestions and complaints which help in the feedback gap between managers and employees. 3. Persuasive Leaders- encourage others to achieve results rather than telling them what to do. They are not highly directive or manipulative in their influence attempts which is what sets them apart from autocratic leaders. However, in high risk situations or life threatening situations they may need to be assertive and direct. 4. Sensitive to Feelings- shows concern for self-esteem when providing negative feedback. They give feedback confidentially and constructively. Care is taken to avoid giving critical feedback or reprimanding employees in public. They work to enhance self-esteem as appropriate to the person’s real talents, abilities and achievements. 5.
