The prerequisites are listed in The Undergraduate Catalog or the equivalent with a grade of at least C; and admission to an appropriate major sequence in engineering. Goal: To learn systematic strategies, methods, and techniques for solving engineering design problems in the 21st Century. Text: Product Design: Techniques in Reverse Engineering, Systematic Design, and New Product Development , K. N. Otto and K. L. Wood, Prentice-Hall, NY, 2001. In order to gain greater benefit from the lectures, you should complete the assigned reading before coming to class. Even a superficial first reading the night before the class period will improve your comprehension and retention of the material covered in class. Your performance in this course will rely on how well you assimilate the assigned reading. You also will be tested on assigned reading material that may not be covered in lecture or lab. Course Objectives: When you successfully complete the course, you will have the following skills and knowledge: Design Process and Problem Specification Define, compare and contrast conceptual design, redesign, and reverse engineering. Identify ethical and unethical behavior and devise appropriate responses to resolve unethical or ambiguous situations. Identify behaviors that promote teamwork and encourage pursuit of these behaviors. Restate a design problem in language that does not imply a solution. Determine whether a problem statement is too specific or general. Differentiate between ordinal and cardinal rankings.
