PCA0015 Computer Applications Chapter 4 Learning Outcomes / Objectives: Upon completion of this topic, the students should be able to: Differentiate between primary storage and secondary storage. Identify various types of storage media and storage devices. Describe how a hard disk organizes data. Differentiate among CD-ROMs, CD-RWs, DVD-ROMs, and DVD-RWs. When buying a computer, how do you know when you have enough hard drive space? That’s just a rhetorical question. Experts will tell you that you can never have enough hard drive space! Storage holds data, instructions and information for future use. Inside your computer there are two types of data storage: permanent and temporary. Separate methods or devices are used for each type of data. Data in permanent storage stay in the system even when the computer's power is turned off. Data brought into the computer via another storage device are stored temporarily while needed. But when the system is turned off, data in temporary storage disappear. Most desktop computers use the same standard components for temporary and permanent data storage. The computer's temporary storage is called random-access memory (RAM). The data you are currently working with resides in RAM (RAM is also known as primary storage). RAM is volatile. Volatile means the contents are lost when the power is turned off. The most common permanent data storage media (also known as secondary storage ) are the hard disk, diskettes, CD, and DVD. Secondary storage is non-volatile, meaning its contents remain even when the power is switched off. A storage device is the computer hardware that records and/or retrieves items to and from the storage media. Writing is the process of transferring data, instructions and information from memory to a storage medium. Reading is the process of transferring these items from a storage medium into memory. Capacity is the number of bytes (characters) a storage medium can hold. Adding storage capacity is one of the most common PC upgrades.
