PCA0015 Computer Applications Chapter 6 Objectives: Upon completion of this topic, the students should be able to: Identify the different types of applications software Provide examples of application software Explain the uses of application software 6.1 Application Software Application software consists of programs designed to make user more productive and/or to assist them with personal task. Application software has a variety of uses: a. To make business activities more efficient b. To assist with multimedia and graphics project c. To support home, personal, and educational tasks d. To provide communications 6.2 Application software is available in a variety of forms: Types of software Description Packaged software Mass-produced, copyrighted retail software that meets the needs of all users. E.g. word processing and presentation software Custom software Performs functions that cater the needs of a specific business or industry. Sometimes programmer needs to develop tailor- made custom software which usually more expensive that packaged software Web-based software Programs hosted by a web site. Users access and interact with Web-based software from any computer or device that is connected to the Internet. Examples are e-mail, word processing and game programs. Open source software Usually can be downloaded from the Web at no cost and can be distributed to others. The source code is included, thus modification can be done Shareware Copyrighted software that is distributed at no cost for a trial period. If the user wants to continue using the software, the user need to pay some amount of money Freeware Copyrighted software provided at no cost by an individual or a company that maintains all rights to the software Public-domain software Donated for public use and has no copyright Retail software is more powerful compare to shareware, freeware and public- domain programs.
