Substance Use and Abuse A variety of substances are used in many cultures with social sanction. Alcohol, caffeine and nicotine are examples of psychoactive drugs used almost endemically Psychoactive substances can be obtained legally (OTC or prescribed) or illegally.

Substance dependence A pattern of compulsive behavior related to obtaining, using and recovering from the drug/substance. Also may be associated with tolerance and withdrawal. Continued drug/substance use despite obvious consequences and in preference to other important activities or relationships

Associated Definitions Tolerance A consequence of the body adapting to the presence of the drug. Increasing amounts are required to achieve its desired effect. Withdrawal A result of physiologic dependence on the drug or substance.
