Emily Ko Prof. Jennifer Theater History 16 December 2008 Final Essay – 1 Corneille’s Le Cid was somehow a successful play in seventeenth century. It is a play based on the story of Chimene and Don Rodrigue’s struggle between their lover and the revenge of their father. Don Rodrigue was asked by his father to kill Chimene’s father, Don Gomes, because Don Gomes snapped on his father’s face. Chimene was sad about what happened to her father since the killer was her beloved man. She was supposed to kill the man for her father but she could not make it because of her lover for him. Don Rodrigue went on a war for their country, killed the enemy of their country, and won a high honor from the king. Because the honor Don Rodrigue won was so high in their country, Chimene decided not to kill him but marry him. Although Le Cid was a successful play, some of the critics did not consider it successful.
