Emily Ko 10/7/2008 Paper #2 CRN: 73333 A Mysterious Shadow Even though the people are educated to face all races equally, racism is still major problem in the society. It has influenced a majority of people in our society to avoid having contact with African-American in public space. Since the majority of people have been taught to be aware of suspicious characters, anywhere on the road, people often stay far away from the suspects. However, it is often unfair that people in United States are fear of African-American. In the article “Just Walk On By” Brent Staples, an African-American male, faces a massive situation that people speed walk away from him just because of his race, height (six feet), and his looks. For example, Staples walked on a street in Chicago in the middle of the night and encountered a woman on the sidewalk at the same time. It was a quiet night; however, “within seconds she disappeared into a cross street” (404). The reaction of
