ISRAEL Part 1:  Creation of Israel Zionism – “the national movement of the Israeli people back to the  promised land of Palestine” 1. Zionism began late 1800s a. Theodor Hertzl (of Central Europe) envisioned a Jewish state (with  Socialist bent). b. “Give your hand to the great redemption project!” i. By 1920s, hundreds of thousands of Jews immigrating to  British Palestine. Competing with Arabs for resources, esp.  land. ii. Mid-1930s – militant Zionists attacked British and  Palestinians. Palestine (pre-Israel) 1. **In-class maps shown** a. Showed 1945 map, population percentages of ethnics distribution. b. Large Jewish population growth! From 20 to 85 thousand. 2. 1937 – Arabs rejected British proposal to redistribute land. European Holocaust - 6 million Jews killed. - 1947 – Refugee camps in West Europe held 250,000 displaced Jews  (survivors of Holocaust, unwilling or unable to return to their communities). 1. Aftermath a. Many fled illegally by boat to British-governed Palestine, but the  British caught most of these ships and deported the Jews to  Cyprus. Nakba – catastrophe 1. March 10, 1948 – Jewish leaders give orders to drive out Palestinians. a. 531 Palestinian villages and 11 urban neighborhoods were purged. 2. 700,000 Palestinians flee (mostly to Lebanon, Egypt, and what is now the  West Bank). 1. On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion announced the formation of the state  of Israel, declaring, “The Nazi Holocaust, which engulfed millions of Jews  in Europe, proved anew the urgency of the reestablishment of the Jewish  State, which would solve the problem of Jewish homelessness by opening  the gates to all Jews and lifting the Jewish people to equality in the family
