2 ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE Assessing Organizational Culture Culture can be found just about anywhere. Different countries have different cultures and it is the same in the business environment. Every business or organization has a culture, whether recognized or not, and this culture ultimately plays a vital role in the success or failure of the business or organization. In order to examine organizational culture in detail, it is important to establish a working definition of the term organizational culture. Organizational culture describes the psychology, attitudes, experiences, beliefs and personal and cultural values of an organization. Organizational culture has been defined as "the specific collection of values and norms that are shared by people and groups in an organization and that control the way they interact with each other and with shareholders outside the organization." Organizational culture is a set of shared mental assumptions that guide interpretation and action in organizations by defining appropriate behavior for various situations. In an article by Tom Richman, Allan Kennedy who co-wrote a book titled, Corporate Cultures: The Rites and Rituals of Corporate Life said, “The culture of any organization is still a reflection of the deeply held values and behaviors or relatively few individuals; in the case of large companies, those of the CEO and maybe a handful of very senior executives.” Kennedy also states that personal leadership is central to building a strong culture in a company.
