2 LEARNING ORGANIZATION The Learning Organization: The Impact of Social Networks and Social Media The Learning Organization (LO) is essentially a group of people who encourage knowledge and learning. Education and training is highly important in a learning organization and there is a constant search or quest for higher learning and knowledge. Emphasis is placed on education and training not only within the organization but within every member of the organization. The LO can also be compared to the human brain. As the brain of the human body controls every other part of the body, organizations have central offices that control what the other offices within the organization do. Branches of organizations work to achieve the goals that are set by the organizations decision makers. Just as the brain sends signals to body parts to create movement, organizations communicate from top management down to middle management and when employees receive the message, and are instructed by management, they work to achieve the goals of the organization. Many people have attempted to define the term learning organization, describing the effects and the influences on businesses and organizations. As the external environment continually grows and changes, businesses and organizations must also grow, change, and adapt to compete in the external global economy. The LO can be described as a response to an increasingly unpredictable and dynamic business environment. According to Farago and Skyrme, learning organizations are those that have in place systems, mechanisms and processes, that are used to continually enhance their capabilities and those who work with it or for it, to achieve sustainable objectives - for themselves and the communities in which they participate (Farago & Skyrme, 1995).

Previous observation and research of learning organizations has identified four different
