Managerial Skills 2 Improving Management by Following Mintzberg’s Suggested Managerial Skills As time draws near for graduation in May, it is an important time to reassess the skills and accomplishments that have gotten the undergraduate where they are, and where they will go in the future. The books have been read, homework done, and the degree will soon be handed over. Even though they have gotten this far, it still isn’t time to quit. One should prepare a resume, apply to an employer or employers, and show the employer what makes the applicant more deserving than all the others. Getting the degree is the easy part. Landing a great job takes someone with experience and a broad range of knowledge and skills in their field. In order for one to gain experience as a manager, which is a requirement for a lot jobs, Mintzberg listed 8 different managerial skills. These skills are important for one to master if they want to be a successful manager in the workplace. Mintzberg’s suggested managerial skills are Developing peer relationships, Carrying out negotiations, Motivating subordinates, Resolving conflicts, Establishing information networks, Disseminating information, Making decisions in conditions of extreme ambiguity, and Allocating resources. Each will be discussed in detail with information about how one can gain experience doing these things outside of the classroom, as real experience. The first one is Developing peer relationships.
